The Apostolic Succession

The "Apostolic Succession" is the unbroken line of Roman Catholic Popes from St. Peter through the current Pope, Pope Francis.

The list of Popes, in order, is shown on the left.

A good way down the list you will see the split from the Catholic Church by Henry VIII. The Reformation was starting at about this same time period. However, The Church of England started by Henry was not part of the Reformation.

The Church of England (i.e., The Episcopal Church / Anglican Church) kept/keeps the liturgy of the Catholic Church. The list of Archbishops of Canterbury is shown (on the right) to indicate that, althought split from the Catholic Church, the rules that only a bishop may ordain/consecrate a new bishop has been maintained. Or, the list on the right is not part of the apostolic succession.
