A Layperson's Guide To Decision Making On Things Political

This site is dedicated to all those who do not have the time nor the inclination to do the research necessary to make informed decisions on today's most complex political scene.

Before beginning there are a few notes that may be helpful:

1. As we all pretty much know, politicians have a tendency to lie. Sometimes they lie outright. These are easily discovered with a modicum of research on the internet - IF one bothers to look. Most often, however, politicians lie by what I call "obfuscation" - or, diverting the focus of the listener.

As an analogy: A woman suspects that her husband is having an affair with his secretary. She truly doesn't want to believe it, but she does. So, she asks her husband, "Are you having sex with your secretary?". He responds with, "Honey, I give you my word I have never slept with my secretary." Now, as he has never actually "slept" with his secretary, his answer is the truth. But, as you'll easily see that is not the question the wife asked. He offered an answer that his wife really did want - not the real truth - but, the answer she wanted.

The above analogy is how politicians tell us what we want to hear, independent of the actual truth. One must - and should - listen very closely to both questions and answers - ALWAYS.

2. Form your opinions on a combination of good old common sense and consistency. If what you hear or see just doesn't smell right, research it before accepting it. Don't let political correctness and/or obvious pandering cloud your judgement. An example:

Recently the State of North Carolina (NC) has been under political attack for its position on transgender bathroom use. Cirque du Solei has cancelled performances in NC to display their "moral outrage" at NC's position. Laudable, some say of their decision. Horrendous, say others. Independent of one's personal views on the subject, Cirque du Solei will still perform in Dubai where gays are put to death for the crime of being homosexual. This is truly a common sense/consistency "FAIL". Could it be that Cirque du Solei is but following the oldest of adages - FOLLOW THE MONEY? Of course the company is! But, don't be deluded by the news as it appears on the surface.

As a slight aside here, but on topic, consider that whenever a company seems to take a stance that someone - maybe not you, but someone - would find is the "moral" or "right" thing to do, look "behind the curtain". More than likely you'll find some powerful government entity - with an agenda - offering a somewhat strong "suggestion". Just sayin' !

3. I consistently offer in my political offerings that one should NEVER accept as fact what one sees or hears from the media or even from those one trusts without vetting the statement(s). It is the human condition to believe what makes one most comfortable. Hearing/seeing something that is comfortable is not necessarily the truth. I offer that same advice on what I offer here - CHECK EVERYTHING!

The Layperson's Guide

FIRST, become familiar with the United States Constitution.

It IS the primary law of our Nation. View and understand it as such - it is NOT a set of suggestions. A copy of the US Constitution may be viewed HERE.

If statements in the US Constitution seem less than clear, look to its authors for clarity. Do Google searches on the puzzling words/sections and peruse the Federalist Papers.

Yes, I know that the Supreme Court has the function to interpret the US Constitution for us. So, why should we bother doing the research ourselves?

The answer is pretty simple actually. If one looks closely, the Supreme Court offers opinions; it does not speak ex cathedra. Or, an earlier Supreme Court's opinion may be reversed. This can happen by a later Supreme Court's differing opinion, although very rare, or by an amendment to the US Constitution.

It is obvious that the Supreme Court's opinions count more than yours or mine - their opinions become law. However, that in no way implies that the Court's opinions are correct. A case in point: Should the Justices of the Supreme Court execute their responsibility to truly interpret the US Constitution as the framers intended, there would be no reason to consider whether a Republican or a Democrat, for example, did the appointing of a new Justice. There would be no "bais" of any Justice toward conservative or toward liberal/progressive leanings. As it is, each new Justice brings his or her own political bias to the party. Once bias enters the game incorrect and inconsistent interpretations are the result.

Look to what the Founders actually meant, not to how current mores may affect what we may wish it to say. If something exists in the US Constitution that is not agreeable to you, seek to change the Constitution. To simply ignore or act opposed to what you don't like is not appropriate and, if continued in a larger sense, will be detrimental to the Nation.

SECOND, as offered above, check everything before forming an opinion - even if what you hear is NOT what you want to hear. BUT, check everything ESPECIALLY if it is what you want to hear. Don't be deluded by obfuscation - or anything else.

And, THIRD, take the time to watch the below videos.

I have included a selection of video "essays" by Bill Whittle. Why him in particular?

Mr. Whittle offers what I consider a great format for expressing ideas. Each of his videos is around 6 1/2 minutes (plus or minus a bit) in duration. With each video he presents a sort of behind the scenes look at what is being offered as news by NBC, MSNBC, CBS, FOX, CNN, and the like.

Some may choose to agree with his positions; some may not. That is each individual's privilege - NO - it is every individual's RIGHT as specified in the above mentioned US Constitution.

However, I have vetted each and every piece of information he offers as to their validity. I have found the information he provides 100% accurate. As I have mentioned above, I suggest you do the same and verify everything. Form your own opinions/conclusions; but, don't ignore the validity of the information provided.

There is no intended or required order of video viewing - each has its own merit in standalone fashion.

More of Bill Whittle's insights may be found on YouTube and at his site, www.billwhittle.com.
