Despicable Political Ad

The pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities USA, recently aired an attack ad against Mitt Romney. It features former GST Steel worker Joe Soptic. Watch the unedited video of the ad. Then, below the ad are my comments.

There are some problems here. It seems that the "timeline" of events has purposely been obfuscated in the ad.

First, Soptic's wife died five years after GST filed for bankruptcy - which induced the layoffs - AND seven years after Romney left Bain Capital. Romney was NOT responsible for closing the plant and, therefore, was NOT responsible for Soptic's layoff. His wife reportedly had her own health insurance after Soptic left GST. Soptic told CNN that his wife had health insurance through her own employer from that point (i.e., 2001) to 2002 or 2003, when she left that job because of an injury.

Second, Soptic's own statement in the above video states that his wife became sick AFTER he was laid off; and, that tests THEN revealed her cancer; and that she died 22 days after her cancer diagnosis. So, since the poor woman died 22 days after the diagnosis AND five years after the plant closure AND seven years after Romney left Bain Capital, and, IN ADDITION, had her own health insurance after Soptic was laid off, how is it Romney's "fault"? Think about it!

This ad is repleat with lies and disinformation. In the 2008 election, then candidate Senator Obama stated the he would not use negative advertising and that he would stick to the issues at hand. He said he wanted no more “Slash and Burn” politics and promised not to use negative ads as well as keeping the campaign positive and only talk about the issues. It would appear that when one can't run on their record "Slash and Burn" is all one has left.

Now, it is true that Obama and his "official" campaign can't direct or coordinate with any PAC on what they may or may not do - it is illegal to do so. However, it would seem that when such an outrageous ad as this is aired, basically accusing Romney of killing a woman, that Obama would step up and, true to his word in 2008, repudiate such actions as this PAC has taken. And, he has not! The truth and a degree of dignity from the office of the President of the United States of America ought to be worth something, at least.

WAIT! It gets better!

Stephanie Cutter, Obama's Deputy Campaign Manager, on 08 Aug. 2012, when asked about the PrioritiesUSA PAC ad featuring former steelworker Joe Soptic (suggesting that Mitt Romney is responsible for Soptic's wife’s death) said, “I don’t know the facts of when Joe Soptic’s wife got sick, or when she died.”

But, she was on a conference call with Soptic on May 14, 2012 discussing this very issue.

During the May call, which was an Obama campaign conference call, Joe Soptic discussed the loss of his job and his wife’s diagnosis and death. When he was done he said, “Now I’ll turn the call back over to Stephanie.”

She replied,“Thank you, Joe. We really appreciate you sharing your experiences.” This proves she was well advised of the man, his wife and the circumstances of GST Steel. So, she lied on Aug. 8.

Listen to a captured audio of the conference call.

Now, what is important here is that the words Soptic used in the conference call were VERY close to the words used in the above policitical ad done by the PAC, Priorities USA. As such, combined with the fact that she was aware of Soptic, etc., one can reasonably ask the question: "Is there/was there coordination between the PAC and Obama's campaign staff?" If the answer is "Yes", this is illegal.

For those who don't know who Stephanie Cutter is and/or her background, there's this:

In 2010, Ms. Cutter was named Assistant to the President for Special Projects, charged with managing communications and outreach strategy for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In 2011, Cutter was named Deputy Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama.

In September 2011, the White House announced Ms. Cutter would leave her position as Deputy Senior Advisor to serve as deputy campaign manager for Obama for America.
